Dish of the Month - Ja Jang Mein

The Chinese love this traditional Korean dish so much that long ago, we created our own version. It comes the same soy-based dark sauce used in Korean ja jang myun, with ground pork, tofu cubes, shiitake mushrooms and dried shrimp thrown in. Use the cold cucumber shreds as little breaks in between hot mouthfuls of noodles - or just mix it all up into the sauce and noodles. Sounds like a great lunch!

Seven Seas at College Park Gets A Makeover

The owners of Seven Seas Restaurant in College Park decided that it was time to redecorate - and they took on the same color scheme as Seven Seas in Rockville! The process of turning the interior of SS CP into a contemporary, casual dining restaurant started a month ago. It was completed just in time to host a gala event for over 100 guests (including UMD president Wallace Loh) last Thursday.

Dish of the Month - Tofu Roll with Pork and Shrimp

Ground pork combined with minced shrimp rolled in a thin tofu wrap. A small amount of carrots added to the mix for an extra crunch. Garnished with a savory sweet brown sauce and chopped scallions. If you've never had dim sum before and want a sample, this is a very commonly found item served out of carts at any good dim sum restaurant.

Taiwanese-style Sizzling Platter

There is an irresistible charm about eating hot food served out of a street cart. Although we can't replicate the experience of an outdoor Asian night market, we can introduce one dish from Taiwanese night markets - food on a sizzling platter, or "teppan" in Chinese.

The same type of "teppan" dish in the video below is very popular among night market-goers in Taiwan. It has steak, noodles and a half-cooked egg that the diner scrambled up before the hot plate cooled down.

Now you can find sizzling plate dishes at Seven Seas! To add a little variety to the dish's texture, we decided to throw in some vegetables too.

Our chefs prepare two "teppan" dishes

Dish of the Month - REAL Vegetables

It doesn't matter that Congress has declared pizza as a vegetable for school lunches, if it has two tablespoons of ketchup spread over a slice.

Obviously, ketchup is NOT a vegetable. It's a condiment that's high in sodium and the bulk of its calories come from sugar. There's no doubt that we all enjoy having it on our food, but this decision is still shocking and outrageous. It compromises the nutritional standards for our children and is a slap in the face for the fight against obesity.

As local business, what we can do is remind our customers and readers that it's ever more important to ensure that your own children are eating right, even if others who should, do not.
